Research reveals growing risk of data breach from 'Insider Threats', highlights poor privileged user controls at Australian organisations
183 completed telephone interviews with IT and Security Managers employed at Australian enterprises shows that these organizations feel highly vulnerable due to the constantly change nature of the insider threat landscape. Today the threat from within has morphed beyond disgruntled or rogue employees to now include malicious privileged insiders or those who are compromised by advanced malware typical of Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs). Focused on enterprises, the report details concerns, the status of protection today, and organizations plans to offset these threats.
The report reveals key insights into how Australian enterprises prioritize cloud security, data accessibility, privacy violations and compliance requirements as well as their plans for spending to offset the threat. Other key points include:
  • Only 9% of Australian enterprises feel safe against Insider Threats
  • 48% of organizations plan to increase budgets to offset the threat and the same percentage are also finding Insider Threats more difficult to detect than in prior years
  • Concern about insider threats among Australian IT professionals is less than half their U.S. peers
  • Cloud and Big Data add to concerns with high levels of anxiety around cloud provider security, access to sensitive data by third parties and the security of critical reports
